There are some people whose place in our hearts can never be measured. For me, that person is my son, Andre.
As his mother, I was immensely proud of Andre’s accomplishments: watching him grow into an exceptional athlete, pursue his education, and earn the honour of representing Canada. Those were moments of tremendous pride that I will forever cherish.
But my greatest pride was never in the medals, the achievements, or the recognition. It was simply in being his mother.
Before the accolades and competitions, he was my son. I knew the little boy behind the dreams, the determination behind his successes, and the person behind the athlete. I knew his intelligence, his perfectionism, his sense of humour, and the passion he brought to the things that mattered to him.
Andre was also a husband and a father. He built a life beyond athletics, and his love of fitness led him to establish Vacation Body Fitness, his own personal training business. I was proud of what he accomplished, but even more proud of who he was to our family.
I never imagined that I would one day establish a foundation in Andre’s memory. Yet the love I have for him continues to inspire me to create something that can make a difference in the lives of others.
The Andre Wright Legacy Foundation was born from that love. My hope is that his name will help open doors for students entering university and, as our work grows, help people connect with mental health and wellness services when they need support.
Life can bring challenges that are not always visible. Sometimes encouragement, understanding, or a helping hand can make all the difference. That belief is part of the meaning behind our message: Never Lose Hope.
Of all the titles Andre earned throughout his life, the one I will forever treasure most is the privilege of being his mother.
Andre, being your mother was one of the greatest blessings of my life. Honouring your legacy will be one of my life’s greatest purposes.
